Chennai Feb 11: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Sunday stressed the need for establishing exclusive sports schools to bring laurels to the nation.

Inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Inter-engineering College here on Sunday, the Governor urged the private educational institutions and the YMCA to start sports schools like those in foreign countries.

The school should admit children from the age of five and also provide education by giving due emphasis on sports, he said amt expressed confidence that such schools would certainly help identify, train and produce skilled sportsmen. “Sports do not have barriers of language, religion, creed or caste. Sportspersons bring laurels not only to themselves but also the state and the nation,” he said adding that they are nation’s pride and its “our bounden duty to motivate encourage and support them”.

The rural youth have abundant talents and their skills should be identified and nurtured by the educational institutions, he demanded.

According to him, better facilities for training and competition and harnessing of sporting talents in youth and students at school level are essential. Proper training, exercise and coaching would produce good result, he remarked.

A long-term strategy to yield results was necessary, he said noting that the Tamil Nadu Government was implementing a result-oriented five-level pyramidal strategy.

Hierarchy of competitions, talent identification and development of skills, infrastructure, expertise from specialists, encouragement of sponsors would help us achieve success in competitive sports, he added.

About 60, 000 students of engineering colleges from all over the world are participating in the 14 day event, in its silver jubilee year.
