Tamil University ties up with TNPL to grow Eucalyptus

Thanjavur: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Tamil University and the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) to grow eucalyptus, required for the TNPL, in about 430 acres of the university campus for 15 years.

The MoU was signed by the University Registrar (in-charge) Dr G Bhaskaran and TNPL General Manager Padmanaban here on Thursday in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Dr C Subramanian, Department of Tamil Development and HR & CE special Commissioner and Secretary R Karpoora Sundarapandian and Department of Tamil Development Director Dr M Rajendran.

According to the MoU, the TNPL will grow eucalyptus in about 430 acres in the university, which in turn will get 30 per cent of the revenue for providing the land.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, by offering its land to grow eucalyptus, the university would get a revenue of over Rs 1 crore.

He said the university received Rs 12 lakh as revenue by growing eucalyptus during the past 25 years.

“We have identified 430 acres for the purpose. However it will be grown only in 100 acres in the first phase and the entire area will be covered in a phased manner. By growing eucalyptus, the university will get a revenue of Rs 33 lakh once in five years and this revenue can be used for maintenance and development of the university” Subramanian told express.
