Chennai, Aug 6: Dalit students will have to score more marks than those belonging to the Backward and Most Backward Classes to gain admission to the five-year BL degree course offered by the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University this year.
The cut-off marks are: OC - 83.12, SC -77.50, BC - 67.62, MBC - 64,37 and ST -45. Besides that, of the 306 seats under OC category, 152 seats have been cornered by SC students. "It is quite sup rising" says atop administrator in the university.
Till last year, admission to the B.L degree was based on marks scored in the entrance exam. This year, only the Plus Two marks count as the entrance examination has been scrapped by the government.
While 187 students have been chosen under the SC quota of 18 percent, the university received 1,561 applications from SC student out of the total 2,745 applications this year.
One reason for more number of SC students seeking to enter law college could be because there is no age restriction for them. Then of course they also have a five percent relaxation on eligibility criteria, sources point out.
But another reason being cited by an educational activist Prof Kalyani is that law seems to the only option among the professional courses to many SC students as most of them do not get admission to science and mathematics streams in the higher secondary class.
Perhaps it is because law courses are less expensive than other professional courses, an official says.
The varsity has no data readily available on the number of Dalits admitted in the previous years but the authorities are sure that this year could be unique as the entrance examination has been scrapped opening the gate for more rural students.
