Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University preparing Tamil Text Books

Chennai: Soon, students can study MBBS in Tamil. The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University has begun preparing Tamil text books for basic medical sciences like anatomy and physiology.

"The 'Maruthuva Thamizh Mempaatu Committee / comprising experts in the fields of Tamil language and medicine, is developing strategies to make this ambitious project a reality / Dr Meet Mustafa Hussain, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told Express.

Ardent Tamil propagators like Sudha Seshayyan and Awai Natarajan were members of the committee. The university had set up a separate department for the project.

"We require a Tamil glossary of medical terminologies. We will not alter the basic character of the theme/' Hussain added. The text books, which would be ready by December, would be introduced once they were approved.

Interestingly, the Latin and Greek terms used in the English curriculum would be retained. Grammatical Tamil would not be used while preparing the textbooks.
