Teachers of Self - Financing Institutions Seek Grants
Madurai: Disparities in status and service conditions of teachers working in self-financing colleges and handling self-financing courses has created an “academic tensinon,” according to S.Perter Alphonse, Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Addressing the State Convention of the Joint Action Council of college teachers in Tamil Nadu here on Sunday, Mr.Alphonse said recognizing the significance of higher education, the Centre had levied one per cent cess while the State Government had created an exclusive department for higher education.
Suggesting that the Government could consider sanctioning grants for self-financing colleges / courses, he said 25 per cent could be sanctioned for institutions / courses, which had to completed five years, 50 percent for those institutions, which had completed seven years, and 100 per cent for colleges / courses, which had completed 10 years.
The meeting sought grants for the self-financing colleges and courses and urged the Government to take steps to improve service conditions of the teachers working in the institutions. It also appealed to the Government not to permit any more self-financing institutions / courses in the State.
The meeting welcomed the decision to waive tuition fees for students of Government and aided colleges, and wanted to self-financing colleges / courses also. Among other who spoke included K. Arumugam, MLA and S.S.Ghose Batcha MLA.
