Coimbatore: Local Industries have started a skill training programme for school drop-outs and unemployed youths with assured employment to all the trainees in coordination with the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyala in Coimbatore.
Nearly 68 students have been trained in various trades such as turner machinist, electrician, welder and fitter.
“We provide theoretical classes for the students from 5.30 pm – 8.00 pm,” said the Principal of ITI, G Murali and added that they are not able to meet the requirements of skilled technicians in the industry.
This programme is conceived to cater to the needs of the industry.
“Manpower is the need of the hour,” said Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Coimbatore Chapter, K. Thangaraj.
“Here the stress is on practical training is an excellent concept,” he said and appreciated the institution and also the industries that have come forward to support this initiative.
“Students will be enrolled every three months and the programme duration is six months. Any person in the age group of 18-35 can join this programme,” explained murali.
“The entire expenses are borne by the industries. They also provide them accommodation and food it subsidized rate,” Murali added.
“The students gain hands on experience in the industry from morning eight to evening four and then attend theory to supplement the knowledge that they have gained in the morning,” explained Swami Anuragananda, the correspondent of the III.
“We assure them employment soon they complete their course. Infact they are already on our rolls, since they are doing their practical training with us,” said Managing Director Limited M R Ramanujam
An alumni of Ramakrishna Missions Vidyalaya, Ramanujam is in need of 60 students.
“This programme will be very useful for the unemployed as well as school dropouts, who are unsure of their place in the society,” he said.
“They can learn how to start, where to start and what to do from this programme and also earn while they learn,” he explained.
The industries will pay them a monthly stipend that come around Rs.1200 apart from providing fee accommodation and food on subsidized rate.
“Once they complete the six-month course, we will retain them for the next six months paying Rs.2500 each and then take them as permanent employees,” said K. Jayaveeran, Assistant Manager (personal) CPC Premier (Pvt) Limited
“If they come regularly, we are ready to support them,” he said adding that the regular attendance would help them plan their production.
“We have so far absorbed 41 students for this scheme and they are trained as turners, machinists and fitters. With the next training programme, we hope to meet our requirements,” he added.
Suba Plastic and Graveera Metal Industries have also absorbed students and are in need of more.
“This is a fist step for the poor people, who are in need of opportunities. They can earn while they learn and this would help their families very much,” he added.

And the students need not stick to the companies that they train with.
“If they get better opportunities after completing the course, they can leave us too,” said Shekar HR Manager of Graveera Metal Industries.
And the students are also very happy to start a new life.
Suresh Babu (27), a tenth standard school drop out from Salem, is very happy to join this programme.
“I am undergoing training at CPC and I find this as a golden opportunity to start a career,” he said.
A Karunaishwaran from Namakkal and R. Shakthivel from Krishnagiri are also enrolled at CPC and they find this as a once in life-time opportunity to start a fresh career.
Students will be enrolled every three months and the duration of the programme is six mounts. Any person in the age group of 18-35 can join this programme.
