For Attention of aspiring students seeking admission to engineering technology programme in engineering colleges affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka.

As per the VTU Act 1994, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Balgaum, Karnataka is an affiliating University, with jurisdiction over the whole State of Karnataka and is vested with the power of affiliated any academic programme in any engineering college within University area, for admission to the examinations for degrees and other academic distinctions of the University. As per Section 4 (1) of VTU Act 1994, no college in the State of Karnataka imparting Education in Engineering Technology shall save with the consent of the University and sanction of Government be associated in any way with or seek admission to any privileges of any other University in India or abroad. The university grants affiliation for the academic Programmes to any engineering / technical institutions within the University area, without obtaining the affiliation of VTU, Belgaum for the academic programme concerned. University affiliation is mandatory to offer any engineering / technology degree programme in addition to AICTE degree approval. Certain institutions issued advertisements inviting applications for admission to engineering / technology degree without obtaining affiliation from VTU and misguide the aspiring students. The prospective students seeking admission to engineering programmes in Karnataka are cautioned to be aware of unaffiliated programmes / unapproved collaborative programmes with foreign Universities in the existing engineering colleges and unaffiliated Engineering Colleges / Technical institutions.

  1. The list of affiliated programme in the affiliated engineering colleges as on date for the academic year 2007 -08 is available in the University website: http://www.vtu.ac.in
  2. Prospective students are advised in their own interest to ascertain the status of affiliation to the engineering colleges concerned and the programmes offered by them so as to avoid getting admitted in affiliated programmes / Institutions.
  3. There have been instances to complaints that certain colleges advertise tuition fees in the beginning and after admission demand higher admission demand higher amount of fees than advertised. Aspiring students are cautioned to be aware of such institutions.
  4. The prospective students are requested to verify the claims made by the colleges in their advertisement / brochures before taking admission.
  5. The admission eligibility criteria for the year 2007 - 2008 is as follows.

For admission to B.E. / B.Tech. Courses: (Section (iii) of sub-Rule (3): With Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following subjects – Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science Biology, Electronics and secured not les than forty five percent of the aggregate marks in optional subjects and English as one of the languages for admission to Engineering and Technology Courses.

Provided further that, the minimum marks for the purpose of eligibility shall be forty percent of aggregate in optional subjects in case of candidates belonging to the SC / ST and other Backward classes specified in the relevant Government Order for the purpose of reservation in respect of Engineering and technology courses.

For Admission to B.Arch: (Section) (b) sub rule (3) Has passed the Pre-University examination or equivalent examination held proceeding the entrance test with Mathematics as a subject and has secured fifty percent of aggregate marks in all subjects.

If the above eligibility criteria is not satisfied by the students, then the University will not approve the admission of such students. Hence, the students are advised NOT to take admission, if they find themselves not eligible for the course as per the eligibility criteria specified in the Government Order.

It is also cautioned that some of the affiliated engineering colleges are admitting students under NRI quota over the above the prescribed percentage of sanctioned strength without AICTE approval which leads to non-approval of admission.

Students who are seeking admission under NRI quota / Foreign National category / Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) quota are informed that they may look and in case of any clarification, may contact the University office for guidance and clarification regarding furnishing of necessary documents for obtaining Provisional Certificate, before approaching the affiliated engineering colleges for admission.
