Appa Research Centre can now offer Ph.D. Programmes
Sharanabasaveshwar Vidya Vardhak Sangha has become the first private institution in the State to get research centre status from the University of Mysore, which means it can now offer Ph.D. programmes.
President of the sangha, Sharanabasappa Appa, who is also the eight ‘Peethadipathi’ of the Sharanabasaveshwar Samasthan Gulbarga, told presspersons on 4th February, 2012 that the university had accorded recognition to the Appa Research Centre, which is run by the sangha, as one of its research centres.
The university Registrar, in a communication to the coordinator of the Appa Research Centre, conveyed the approval given by the university Syndicate.
It can offer Ph.D. programmes in management studies and tourism management. Incidentally, the centre would be the first in the country to offer a Ph.D. programme in tourism management. Dr. Appa said the centre had applied for permission to offer Ph.D. programmes in 10 subjects, including management studies, tourism management, Kannada literature and fine arts, computer science, english, history, mathematics, physics and music.
Appa Research Centre Library :
While the university had rejected the centre’s plea to offer Ph.D. programmes in English, history and music, it permitted offering programmes in Kannada literature and fine arts, provided the centre acquired quality books related to Kannada literature and fine arts and established an exclusive library for Kannada literature and research. The facilities should be created within six months from the launch of the centre.
Dr. Appa said the university wanted the centre to appoint a professor and an associate professor in computer science with a Ph.D. in the subject and adequate teaching and research experience.
Also, the library infrastructure should be upgraded on priority by improving the infrastructure. It should alsoprocure books worth ₹ 21 lakh.
For starting the Ph.D. programme in physics, the university had recommended setting up separate laboratory facilities for carrying out research, within six months of the launch of the research centre. The library infrastructure should be improved, and books and journals worth ₹ 1 lakh procured.
