Autonomous Colleges offering Job-Oriented UG Program in English Literature

AN autonomous college in the city is offering a job-oriented UG degree programme in English Literature with Computer Applications from this academic year.

Dr GRD College of Science, the first autonomous college to come out with such a course, will prepare expert English language specialists for executive level functioning in the modern business world.

The uniqueness of the course is its content, which includes subjects drawn from business, commerce, visual and computer communication and computer science and applications.

It will lay foundation for broad based knowledge and help in developing the skills of students in communication and technology, said Principal A Ponnusamy.

“It will be useful for students to get employment in any organisation as secretary and also jobs in BPO and Call Centre. They will also be eligible to do PG courses like MBA, MCA and Mass Communication,” he added.

Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor, G Thiruvasagam told this paper that the demand for literature student is there but only very few colleges are interested in offering this course.

“This year very few colleges asked for affiliation to BA English Literature course.

We are ready to give affiliation to more colleges to start BA English this year,” he said.

“Normally self-financing colleges go for attractive courses and want more students. So we need more colleges to come forward to offer this course,” he said.

‘Dr V Uma Devi, Head of the English Department, GRD College said the demand for language and communication in students has prompted the college to start this course.

“We have designed the syllabus in keeping with the trend. If the students complete this course, they can step into any kind of job,” she said.

Principles of Management, Business Economics, Business Communication, Internet and Web design, Public Relations and Advertisement and IT in Business and Knowledge Management are some of the subjects that the students get to learn apart from the regular prose, poetry, fiction and drama.

The students can also take up cafeteria courses, which will yield them a certificate in respective subjects like Secretarial Practise, Business Environment, Business Finance and Modern Banking, English Language Teaching Cross Culturalism and et al.

The principal said that the college will offers 40 seats this year and the course fee will be approximately Rs.10,000 per semester. Bharathiar University will award the degree certificates to the students.
