Bannari Rural Foundation helps Govt School Students get better Education
T. Mithra, a seventh grader of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Sathyamangalam, is finally able to read and write Tamil and English. With support from Bannari Rural Foundation (BRF), the girl has learnt what she missed out in the first six years of her school education.
“For long I could not identify Tamil and English alphabets and so was unable to read and write,” says Mithra who picked up reading and writing abilities in two months. “At the special class conducted in the school, the teacher taught me to read and write,” says the girl who goes about reading anything and everything from cinema posters to Thirukural couplets in bus that she comes across.
Mithra is not the only child the Foundation has helped. In her school alone there are 439 such slow-learning students to whose rescue the Foundation has come by appointing teachers.
The Foundation’s education coordinator P. Shanmugavel says the corporate social responsibility arm of Bannari Amman Group has appointed 12 teachers in the school.
“The teachers, paid by BRF, will work along with Government teachers and compliment their role in helping the students learn better,” Mr. Shanmugavel says. School headmaster K. Othiapan says the Foundation’s action has brought about a positive change in the school. “Last year’s pass percentage was at least 15 per cent more than the previous year’s,” Mr. Othiapan says and adds that students have also started scoring more marks.
Mr. Shanmugavel says as per the suggestions of Sarva Siksha Abiyan Project Director M.P. Vijayakumar and Bannari Amman Group Chairman S.V. Balasubramaniam, the Foundation has adopted eight government high and higher secondary schools by appointing 55 teachers. This is in addition to the efforts it has taken to improve infrastructure. The Foundation carries out such works for government schools based on a MoU it has signed with the Chief Education Officer of Erode.
