BESU to focus on Integrated PG Courses
The Bengal Engineering and Science University ( BESU ) will lay emphasis on multi – disciplinary and integrated post – graduate programs once it becomes the country’s first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology ( IIEST ).
A decision to convert the university into an IIEST was ratified recently by the Union Cabinet.
“We want to place greater emphasis on the post – graduate and research programs at the institute. We are going to introduce several integrated courses and once the IIEST comes up, it will probably not provide any purely undergraduate courses,” said Ajoy Kumar Ray, vice chancellor of BESU said.
West Bengal has provided the country with the first Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT Kharagpur, functioning since 1950 ) and the first Indian Institute of Management ( IIM Calcutta established in 1961 ) and is now ready to provide the model for the other Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology in the country.
BESU will receive over 500 crore from the Centre for its conversion into an IIEST.
Expressing satisfaction over the up – gradation of BESU, Minister for Higher Education in West Bengal Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury said the State government would continue to press for their demand that 50 percent of the seats be reserved for students from the State.
“The State government has nurtured the institute from a college to a deemed university to a State University. Our students should enjoy some benefit from its further up – gradation,” he added.
Dr. Ray said : “The institute plans to introduce a five – year integrated B. Tech and M. Tech program and an integrated M. Tech and PhD or an M Sc. And PhD program.
The Institute will focus on strategic sectors for research and has already charted on the path with the setting up of Centres of Excellence in Green Energy and Sensor systems and healthcare technologies over the past year.
Areas such as nanotechnology and surface engineering, green transportation and power and electronics are also on the anvil.
“I also hope that we shall be able to introduce an inter – disciplinary M. Tech program. While the need for traditional streams like mechanical or civil engineering will always be there, technology in the 21st century will be multi – disciplinary.”
