Applications Invited for Certificate Course in Industrial Health

The National Model Centre for Occupational Health Services, BHEL Tiruchi, will offer Associate Fellow of Industrial Health, a three – month Postgraduate Certificate course in Industrial Health from 1st December, 2012.

Applicants must have completed MBBS degree from an institution recognised by the Medical Council of India, completed internship, must be permanently registered with the State Medical Council / MCI, and must have one year experience in industry / occupational health related work or two years in general practice after completion of internship for pursuing the course accredited by Directorate General, Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes ( DGFASLI ), Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.

According to a BHEL press release, the course being offered at the model centre for the last six years is primarily meant to equip doctors with knowledge in occupational health to enable them to prevent occupational and work related diseases in industry.

The course will open up new frontiers for young doctors aspiring to become industrial medical officers, the release said, adding that the course was compulsory for all doctors working in industries involving hazardous operations and processes as per the Factories Act of the Government of India and as per the Factories Rules of all States in India.

The National Model Centre for Occupational Health Services is only one of its kind in the country, and the first in South India to be accredited by DGFASLI. 

The training programme will focus on Occupational Medicine, Occupation Hygiene, Toxicology, Work Physiology & Ergonomics, Health Information Systems, and Health Education, besides Safety and Environmental Management Systems. Industrial visits will also be a part of the course.

The model centre’s medical, Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene Laboratories are equipped with Computerized Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, whole body Plethysmograph, Spirometers, Orthoraters, personal samplers, and sound level meters for effective monitoring and evaluation of man and work environment, the release said.

BHEL Sets Aside [rupee]10 Lakhs for Scholarships Under CSR initiative

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited ( BHEL ), Tiruchi, has set apart [rupee]10 lakhs to provide scholarships this year to young and bright students from poor and disadvantaged families.

The scholarships will be provided to eligible beneficiaries from Below Poverty Line families, backward classes, children of widows, and physically challenged students for pursuing polytechnic and other courses at colleges, P. Nainar, General Manager, Human Resource, announced during a function organised by the Ladies Wing of BHEL Community Centre to mark donation of school bags to 200 school children from BPL families.

The Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, A.V. Krishnan, distributed the bags in the presence of Rajam Krishnan, Patron of the Community Centre; C. Pankajam Nainar, its president; Senthamarai Samarasam, Secretary; and M.A. Nizam, Secretary and Correspondent of MAM College of Engineering, which sponsored the school bags.

Mr. Nizam joined the Director In – Charge of Centre for Rural Development, Periyar Maniammai University, M. Gabriel Santhi, and G. Mohan, Senior Deputy General Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, in sensitising students to importance of higher education, personal hygiene.
