Bharathiar University Rules to help Rural Students

The decision was taken following representation from the principals’ association Mathematics is no more a stumbling block for the students who want to pursue courses related to computer science in colleges under the Bharathiar University (BU).

The varsity has relaxed the eligibility criterion. So far, Mathematics in Plus 2 was necessary for a student to take up courses like B.Sc IT, B.Sc Computer Science or BCA.

The university wanted to relax the norm in the light of the fact that many rural colleges offer only vocational courses without Maths, and it prevents the rural students from pursuing computer-related courses in their under graduation.

This will have a bearing on their employment potential too.

The decision was taken based on the representation from the principals’ association,” said Prof. G Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the university, during a press conference here on Tuesday.

Yet, since Maths is fundamental to computers, the colleges will conduct a bridge course for one month for the students who have studied only vocational subjects.

Free Education: A total of 1,000 seats are ensured so far under the free education system of the BU this year, as each affiliated college has offered a minimum of 10 free seats per college.

Notably, free seats means not totally free, but the student will have to pay the examination fee and waived from any tuition or other fees, the V-C said.

Students should apply within a week after the Plus 2 results are announced for the free seat. The colleges will do the screening.

Yet, there will be a monitoring committee from the BU to ensure the system is not misused.
