Bharathidasan University revives Five Year M.A. History Course 2013
Bharathidasan University’s Department of History is seeking to reach out to Plus Two passed students by distributing pamphlets that describe its five – year integrated M.A. in History as a platform for scoring well in UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission ) examination.
The integrated course was started five years ago but was discontinued for the last two academic years because of poor response. This time, alongside the usual advertisements in newspapers, aesthetically designed pamphlets that are distributed directly in schools and through Education Department officials in the districts. The strategy seems to be working. “We have started receiving applications.
The course will be resumed once the number of applications exceeds 15. Nearly 50 per cent of the over 3,000 pamphlets have been distributed so far,” N. Rajendran, Head of the Department and Dean of Arts, said. Overlapping course components have been removed and other subjects including Indian Polity, public administration, human rights and social justice, introduced by the UPSC for preliminary and main examinations have been incorporated in the revised syllabi of the integrated programme. Other thrust areas constitute Indian History, Archives Keeping, Archaeology, Political Science, Tourism, Epigraphy, International Relations, History of Science and Technology, and General Knowledge.
Special coaching will be provided for M.A. History students for National Eligibility Test / State Level Eligibility Test that were now compulsory as per the norms of University Grants Commission for taking up jobs as Assistant Professors in colleges and universities. The students would be oriented on research methods and techniques as part of the course to make their pursuance of Ph.D. easier. Besides gaining eligibility for teaching posts in colleges and universities, the students, on completion of the course, could take up jobs for posts of archaeologists, museum curators, epigraphists, journalists, translators, and guides.
Prof. Rajendran said the students would have the opportunity to take part in the department’s various national seminars and workshops, and meet renowned scholars, resource persons from institutions of repute such as Indian Institutes of Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Osmania University, and Indian Space Research Organisation. Students in the integrated programme could exercise the option to concurrently pursue diploma and certificate courses offered by the department,
