Industry, service organizations can apply for status of ‘Approved Institutions’

Coimbatore: In order to involve trade organizations, industry and service institutions in the higher education domain, Bharathiar University will set up a University Industry Interaction and Consultancy Cell, its Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told press conference on Saturday.

The cell would work towards providing employable education to all students, with the concerned effort of the institution and industry. “Industries, hospitals and service institutions can become’ ‘Approved Institutions’ to Bharathiar University and can offer courses to students. They can choose any existing course of the university or can opt for a new course,” he said.

“The university will serve as the facilitator and the industry counterpart will be the service-provider. The curriculum, conduct of examinations and awarding degrees or diplomas will be from the university side; while the rest will be provided by the counterpart,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor has invited people from the industry to apply for the status of ‘Approved Institution'.

There would be an application fee and other subsequent fee to be paid after selection. Once an organization was bestowed with the status, it could choose the course and advertise for it.

The university and the organization would select candidates jointly.

Selected candidates would undertake the course on the industry premises itself.

Faculty and the industry would handle theory classes. Practical classes would involve hands-on training on the industry premises.

Demand and Supply

This brainchild of the Vice-Chancellor has taken shape after considerable deliberation between the industry and the university.

It was felt that there existed a gap between the demand of the industry and the supply of the institution.

Industry representatives promised their whole-hearted support in every way to take the Vice-Chancellor’s dream of employable education forward, at the interaction meeting held prior to the press conference.

“We have not been able to live up to our moto of “Educate to Elevate.”

Elevation does not involve high output in quantity, but enhancing the employability of our students.

Our conversion rate at job fairs is a poor 11.6 per cent. This has to increase multi-fold.

Instead of inviting the companies into our campus at the time of recruitment we have decided to involve them from the stage preparing curriculum,” Dr.Thiruvasagam said.

The Interaction would be based on four parameters – preparing need-based curriculum, ensuring effective and quality teaching, guaranteeing adequate training and useful research programmes.

The concept of ‘Approved Institutions’ was expected to meet both the needs of the institution and the industry.

“It will benefit the students in that they will get practical experience from day one. They will also have non-academicians to take classes.

The industry will get industry-ready graduates or diploma-holders without any extra effort to train them separately. Also the expenditure involved in recruitment will be considerably reduced,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
