BPUT Students petition VC on delay in holding Exam

Usually a university prepares an academic calendar for students. But Tuesday saw an altogether different act.

Annoyed over inability of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) to hold examinations in time, students of M.Tech programs presented their own “academic calendar” to the Vice-Chancellor and requested him to follow it.

The current batch of M.Tech students had taken admission in September 2009. Classes began in October. As per the provision, first semester should have been held within six months. In some colleges, courses for the first semester were over by the first week of this February.

Thereafter students were obviously expecting the first semester. But the BPUT authorities have not yet announced examination schedule.

M. Tech program students on Tuesday prepared their own academic calendar meticulously and presented it to BPUT Vice Chancellor J.K. Satpathy. As per students’ calendar, the M.Tech program should get over by July 2011. They have given specific dates by which registration, holding of examination and publication of results should be completed.

According to sources, the action of students caused irked the Vice-Chancellor.

“Sometime we set a target and we fail to achieve that. The examinations have been delayed. We are trying to solve the issue in a positive frame of mind,” said Mr. Satpathy when contacted.

The Vice-Chancellor said the examination schedule would be posted on website within a day or two.

MTech students, however, have become restive. Going by the snail’s pace at which things moved, there was little chance of M.Tech program getting over by July, a student said. If the further delay was made, job prospects of most of the students would be hampered, he said.
