BU-DRDO Center for Life Sciences offers M.Tech. in Remote Sensing and GIS

The BU-DRDO Center for Life Sciences of the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, will offer an M. Tech. Program in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) from September 2008.

Collaboration

The two-year Program will be offered at the centre in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE).

Program

The Program will include both core and optional elements.

In addition to imparting knowledge and skills in GIS and Remote Sensing, the course will enable students develop skills in related areas such as environmental impact assessment, water resources management, environmental modelling and computing.

The Program is open to candidates who have studied under the 10+2+3 pattern and are graduates with a B.Sc. in Science or Agriculture, a B.E., B. Tech. or B.FSc.

No previous knowledge of GIS or Remote Sensing is required.

Management

According to the center’s Director S. Balasubramanian, GIS is a rapidly growing technological field for resource planning and management. “The aim of the course is to develop a pool of trained manpower readily available for recruitment in various utilities working on GIS and Remote Sensing fields,” he said.

Opportunities

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be able to clinch job opportunities in the State and Central Governments, academic institutions, private sector, as entrepreneurs or work abroad.

State and Central Government organisations / agencies like the Space Application Centre (SAC) will employ such trained people as scientists, project co-ordinators, technical assistants, GIS Programrs, research scholars, etc.

They can also work as project managers, system analysts, image analysts, etc., in private companies and also in countries like the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, China, Malaysia, France, Germany and Australia.
