Career Guidance Program 2012
I have completed my BCom with 74%. I have the option of going for an MCom or an MBA. I am confused. Which is a better option and could you suggest some institutes for MBA as I have not taken CAT or MAT? – Jagriti Verma
Since you haven’t taken CAT or MAT, the question of pursuing a decent MBA at this point doesn’t arise, which in a way, is just as well. Reason? For one, you don’t have the necessary work experience to get into a good Bschool . A good B – school is very important, particularly since we have thousands ( yes thousands ) of B – schools in our country today. In such a situation, the kind of job you will get after studying at a top – end B – school and that ( if any ) which you may get after graduating from a B – grade one would be vastly different.
One very do – able option is to find yourself a job and do your MCom through distance learning.
This would be a win – win situation because in two years’ time, you’ll have a postgraduate degree in your pocket. You will also have sufficient work – ex for getting into a good B – school – provided you’ve scored well in CAT ( or its variants like the XAT, SNAP, GMAT, MAT, etc ). Moreover, you’ll be lot clearer about the sector you wish to work in and the functional area of management you wish to specialise in.
Phd Course :
I want to become a professor in an Indian university. I completed my MCom from Tamil Nadu Open University. I belong to the SC community. I also took the UGC – NET exam in June but I can’t pursue a regular PhD because I am working. Could you guide me on the university and PhD course in the commerce or management area? – Krishan Kumar
If you’re interested in pursuing further studies and research in fields of management, science & technology, law, humanities or other emerging and interdisciplinary areas such as IPR and cyber law and security, the collaborative two year PhD programme offered by IMT and National Law University ( NLU ), Jodhpur is a good idea.
The minimum eligibility criterion for this programme is a postgraduate degree in the concerned discipline or subject, from an Indian or foreign university, with minimum 55% aggregate or equivalent.
Admission to this programme is through an entrance test followed by a personal interview ( either at NLU or IMT ). The 100 marks, multiple – choice – based question paper will broadly cover communication skills, mental ability / reasoning and research aptitude.
You’ll have to be in residence at NLU or an IMT campus for at least 60 days in total in the four semesters of your research period ( each academic year comprises two semesters ).
IMT will provide technical support and faculty for online interaction through video conferencing for this two – year programme ( which can be extended up to four years ). Check out details on www.imtcdl.ac.in/phd_about.htm
Social Advertising :
What is social advertising? Does it require any special skills? – Anonymous
Social advertising essentially focuses on issues of social relevance to acquaint or educate people on issues that concerns them. Advertising agencies are rediscovering their passion for social advertising, which also offers them a platform to showcase their creativity. Many of the leading agencies have a special department for social advertising.
The best advertising talent is taking up the challenge to make films on social messages targeted at creating awareness about AIDS, family planning, child abuse, etc, many of which are an aesthetic treat. The volume of such films has also increased as more corporates support causes or initiatives to enhance their people – friendly image or corporate social responsibility ( CSR ).
Some of these ads are so ingenious and creative that they corner a fair share of awards on the global stage at Cannes, etc.
Social advertising also gives you a free hand as the work is mainly pro – bono ; TV channels and radio stations run them free or at discounted rates, but newspapers carry them for a price. Needless to say, to create effective social advertising ( or any other advertising for that matter ) requires excellent communication skills. But over and above that, you must be able to conceptualise a theme and present it simply yet powerfully.
Teaching English :
I’m pursuing my Master’s in English, but I will be moving to Bahrain with my husband. Could you please elaborate on the TESOL courses? – Vanya Baxi
You can choose from a range of TESOL ( Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages ) certification and diploma courses.
TESOL teachers are trained to meet or exceed the demands of English learners, who not only need to learn English in theory, but most importantly, need to know how to ‘use’ the language effectively in everyday situations. These English language teachers are soughtafter around the world. Tesol India ( www.tesolindia.com ) is the Indian wing of Global Tesol College, an institution based in North America, with headquarters in Edmonton , Canada.
Diverse Avenues :
I have completed my Master’s in social work and have a certificate in disaster management. I am presently pursuing a diploma in nutrition and health education. Could you please suggest some better options, what else can I do for a good and permanent job in the teaching sector in the same field? – Yasmin Khan
With your qualifications, you can look at openings in any of the leading NGOs operating in the disaster management or child development sector, besides government and UN agencies operating in these fields.
For teaching at the university level, you need to clear the UGC NET or your state – level eligibility test.
But until you clear the UGC NET or your state – level eligibility test, you can contact relevant institutions in your vicinity where you can start teaching as a visiting faculty.
