All Medical Seats filled on Final Day of Counselling
All available MBBS seats under the government quota in various medical colleges in Pondicherry have been filled on the final day of the counselling conducted through the Centralised Admissions Committee (CENTAC).
According to an official at CENTAC, the counselling for medical seats concluded on Thursday with the seats released by the court being filled in the morning.
The total number of seats available under the government quota was 415. This included the 150 seats in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute.
It is to be recalled that as per the directions of the Supreme Court, admission process for professional courses should be completed on or before 30th September, 2010.
This direction has been adhered to by CENTAC with the process being completed on Thursday.
The official said that as per the final tally, 515 engineering seats across Puducherry were left vacant. The last phase of counselling for the engineering seats concluded on Wednesday.
The question that now arises is how the government would handle the vacancy situation.
According to a senior official at the Department of Collegiate Education, a decision on whether to allow private colleges to convert the vacant government quota seats into management quota will be taken after the department receives a detailed report from CENTAC.
Last year, the seats that were left vacant at the end of the counselling were converted to management quota seats and the respective colleges were allowed to fill the vacancy on their own.
