Centralised Admission Process suggested

A high-power committee has recommended centralised admission process for courses offered by Bangalore University’s Directorate of Correspondence Course and Distance Education (DCC&DE) from the next academic year.

The committee, which was appointed to review the functioning of the study centres of DCC&DE following allegation of examination malpractices against some centres, has also recommended that the study centres should be a part of affiliated colleges of a university in the State and not any other unrecognised institutions. The report of the committee, headed by Chambi Puranik, former Dean (Academics), Karnataka State Open University, has stated that such a move is essential for ensuring an academic ambience and to prevent exploitation of students by the private study centres.


A majority of the existing study centres, as per the report, are in the nature of private tutorials without offering any basic facilities for students despite being paid tuition fee by the directorate for such purposes.

The committee also suggested that the principal or any other senior faculty members of the respective affiliated college should be appointed as the coordinator of study centre. And, the number of students attached to a study centre should not exceed 1,000 as at present some centres have admitted (with the permission of the directorate) about 2,500 to 3,500 students despite not having facilities.

It has been suggested by the committee that the directorate through the centralised admission process should allot the students to the study centres as per their convenience instead of accepting the applications through the centres.

The committee has also suggested that a study centre should not take up or run correspondence courses of any other university from outside Karnataka without permission from Bangalore University. The Syndicate of the university recently accepted the report and recommendations of the committee.
