( Formerly Known as Biotechnology Overseas Associateship )

Department of Biotechnology invites applications for the DBT CREST AWARD 2012 – 13 ( Department of Biotechnology – Cutting – edge Research Enhancement and Scientific Training – Award ) formerly known as Biotechnology Overseas Associateship ( BTOA ) programme.

DBT CREST AWARD aims to promote capacity building in cutting edge areas of biotechnology and life sciences. The Award will promote and support scientists of highest merit in their pursuit of skill enhancement in scientific research / training in Overseas laboratories.

DBT – CREST AWARD for promotion of scientific excellence in the state of Jammu & Kashmir : Five ( 5 ) DBT CREST AWARDS would be awarded to scientists / Researchers holding permanent / regular position in Government recognized research and academic Institutions / Universities actively engaged in biotechnology or related R&D work in the state of J&K. All other procedure / terms and conditions are as per DBT crest award. Candidates should super scribe in the application and envelope DBT CREST AWARD for Jammu and Kashmir.

Applications are invited for the award of DBT – CREST ( 2012 – 2013 ) and DBT – CREST AWARD for promotion of scientific excellence in the state of Jammu & Kashmir ( 2012 – 13 ) for the period of one to twelve months.

  • Industrial biotechnology and biochemical engineering
  • Basic research in modern biology
  • Nano – biotechnology
  • Bioinformatics and IT – enabled biotechnology

Applications containing proposed work in any other promising / upcoming areas related to life science and biotechnology can also be considered

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants should hold a Ph. D degree or equivalent degree in the area of life sciences, biotechnology or biopharmaceuticals or M.D. in medicine/ M. Pharma or M.Tech with good research contribution and 3 years research experience.
  2. Applicants should hold regular / permanent positions in Government recognized research and academic institutions / universities and should be actively engaged in biotechnology or related R&D work.
    Note : Applications from persons working on temporary positions ( e.g. Research fellows or associates etc. ) will not be considered.
  3. Age : Up to 55 years ( as on last date of submission )
  4. Proposed area of work should be among the above mentioned areas or related to life science or biotechnology field in general.
  5. Host institute should be internationally recognized academic / research institution and should be willing to accept and extend necessary support to candidate for the proposed research work. [ Consent letter to be enclosed ].

Call for Proposals for Establishment of Institutional Level Biotech Hubs

The Department of Biotechnology ( DBT ), Ministry of Science & Technology invites proposals from institutes / colleges / Universities of higher education of the North Eastern Region of India offering undergraduate and / or postgraduate courses in any branch of Biology / Life Science / Biotechnology / Environmental Science / Chemistry / Physics / Computer Science / Biomedical Sciences / Agri / Veterinary Sciences for establishment of Biotech Hubs under the special programme for the North Eastern States.

R & D institutions in this region those are actively engaged in biological research will also be considered for this program. The broad purpose of the programme is to promote education and research in Biology / Life Science / Biotechnology and to attract brilliant young students to build their career in different fields of biological sciences / biotechnology.

The support under this programme will be provided initially for a period of 3 years.

Under this programme DBT proposes to provide the following facilities to each Biotech Hubs :

  • A biotechnology lab with basic set of equipments
  • Support for site preparation / renovation
  • Computers with Internet connectivity
  • Biotechnology electronic journal access facility
  • Recurring budget for procurement of chemicals, glassware and for maintenance of Internet connectivity
  • Support for Organizing Trainings / Workshops for teachers
  • Travel Support for Conference allowance, short term training in any Institute in India.
  • Student Fellowships etc.

Depending on the status and potential, the institutions will be identified for providing necessary infrastructure support both for teaching and research activities and will be funded accordingly.

Each biotech hub will be looked after by a Coordinator to be named by the host institute and guided by a small committee constituted as per guidelines framed by DBT.

The host institution shall have to provide necessary space and accommodation. Applications from the institutions those have already received either institutional level or state level Biotech hubs will not be considered.

Special Call for Proposals on Affordable Health Care Technologies and Products

Biotechnology Industry Partnership Programme ( BIPP ), an Advanced Technology scheme approved by Government is a unique initiative of Department of Biotechnology ( DBT ) to nurture R&D and innovation in Biotech Industry.

Realizing the importance of developing affordable healthcare technologies and products for the country, the DBT, under BIPP, hereby, announces a second Special Call for Proposals in this area. Focus under this Special Call is on development of affordable healthcare products and technologies, maintaining superior levels of quality, safety and efficacy. Proposals can be submitted in the areas of :

  • Diagnostics
  • Vaccines
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Therapeutics
  • Bio – medical devices
  • Other allied areas

Collaborative proposals involving a joint effort by biotech Industry sector and public sector institutions / universities / other organizations towards developing innovative, affordable solutions to existing healthcare problems in the country are encouraged.

Who can apply for Healthcare Proposals?

A single or consortia of Indian “for profit” company(ies) – Small, Medium or Large having DSIR recognized in – house R&D unit(s). An Indian Company is defined as one which is registered under “The Indian Companies Act, 1956” and in which 51% ( or more ) of the ownership is held by Indian citizens ( including NRIs ).

The proposals can be submitted :

  • by an Indian Company alone; or
  • by an Indian Company along public sector R&D institution(s), organization(s), laboratory (ies), university (ies) etc.; or
  • by a consortium of Indian Companies; or
  • by a consortium of Indian Companies along with public sector R&D institution(s), organization(s), laboratory (ies), university (ies) etc.

( Companies in the process of obtaining DSIR recognition may also apply along with the proof of application to DSIR. However, the final decision on such applications would be subject to their getting DSIR recognition )

Company User Registration is open round the clock. Online Proposal Submission would begin from 1st July, 2011. No Hard Copy to be submitted, Proposals submitted online only would be considered.

Biotech Consortium India Limited ( BCIL ) is the BIPP Management Agency and will ensure maintenance of strict confidentiality of the proposals as per DBT norms.

Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Programme (BIRAP)

A programme of Department of Biotechnology in partnership with ABLE & BCIL announces. Second Series of One Day Workshop on Department of Biotechnology.

“How to Write an Effective Grant Proposal”

Subsequent to overwhelming response of the Industry on the series of grant writing workshops organized during March 2010, BIRAP is pleased to announce a second series of one – day workshops for capacity building in partnership with Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), New Delhi and Sathguru Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad.

The primary aim of these one day sessions is to sensitize researchers in Biotechnology Industry, in particular SMEs and Start ups as well as the aspiring entrepreneurs on the key issues involved in writing an effective Grant Proposal to seek funding for discovery, proof of concept, translational research, validation etc. with special emphasis on the DBT supported Innovation and Industry Partnership Programmes.

About the Workshop :

The Workshop shall focus on the Do’s and Don’ts of a Winning Grant Proposal. Experts will throw light on the “Must Haves” for a successful proposal. Model case studies will also be presented for better understanding of the key issues.

Expected Outcome :

The Industry especially the SMEs, Start ups and the young budding entrepreneurs are expected to benefit from the tips and techniques on writing winning proposals from experts which would in turn enhance their chances of getting through the Government funding schemes.
The exact venue will be communicated to the participants a week before the event.

Registration Process :

Registration is open to interested candidates from Biotechnology Industry and individuals aspiring to become biotech entrepreneurs. Applications will be considered on a first cum first serve basis. Interested candidates have to send a requisition for attending the workshop in the prescribed format (available at BIRAP website) by email to

Last date for sending the requisitions is 1st July, 2011. Emails received after 1st July, 2011 shall not be entertained. Candidates will be short listed based on the company profile and / or relevance of work experience / technical experience in context of the workshop.

The shortlisted candidates will be informed via email and will be required to submit a registration fee of 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only) per candidate. The fee has to be submitted only by the shortlisted candidates in the form of a demand draft, in favour of Biotech Consortium India Limited.

DD should be submitted on the day of registration only and should not be sent by post in advance.The candidates will have to confirm their participation within 48 hours of receipt of communication to enable the registration. Only registered candidates can participate in the workshop. Please note that no cash payment shall be accepted.
