Diploma Holders Aspiring for Lateral Entry into Engineering Courses

Bangalore: Diploma holders aspiring for lateral entry into engineering courses are in the dark. The results of their entrance test for admissions into third semester engineering was supposed to be announced on August 10.

It has been more than a week since and the students are yet to get their results. There has been no official word from the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), which conducts the entrance test as well as the seat selection process, on the reason behind the delay

According to the schedule announced in the application-cum-brochure, the seat selection process was supposed to commence from August 20. There is no information on whether the schedule has been revised.

No idea at all

That is not all. The students have no idea about the fee structure or the seat matrix.

All this comes at a time when third semester engineering classes to which they are supposed to be admitted have already commenced.

According to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) provisions, diploma students can join engineering courses in the third semester through lateral entry.

An entrance test is conducted to draw the merit list. As many as 10 per cent of the seats in an engineering college are earmarked for these students.

"We are waiting for the results. Most of the students have not accepted job offers as they are planning to pursue engineering. But third semester classes have already commenced and students are losing out by the day', said Mr. Nagaraj, parent of a student who has taken the entrance test.

Confusion

There is confusion about the fee structure. Students wonder whether last year's two-tier fee slab or this year's common fee structure would be applicable to them. For the engineering stream last year, the seats were divided into free seats (Rs 17,590 per annum) and higher fee seats (Rs.88, 090).

This year, the two-tier system was scrapped and all students had to pay a uniform fee of Rs.25, 000 per annum. As these students would be entering the third semester, logically last year's fee structure would be applicable.

But at the same time, as admissions are taking place this year, will not the uniform fee structure be applicable, contend students.

As many as 12,000 students appeared for the entrance test conducted last month. While the seat matrix has not been notified, sources said as many 3,200 seats will be available this year.

Delay

When contacted, DTE officials said compilation of the withheld scores in the diploma examination had resulted in the delay. The results will be tentatively announced on August 22.

However, the seat selection process will have to wait till the completion of on-going casual vacancy round at the CET Cell which will go on till September 8.
