Dr. MGR Medical University to introduce New Courses

The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University will soon introduce a two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine and a three-year B.Sc course on Clinical Nursing.

Addressing news persons here on Friday, Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr.Mayil Vahanan Natarajan said that MBBS students can do the PG Diploma and become specialists in Family Medicine. “They will not only get equipped to practice general medicine, they will also be known as specialists, rather than just general practitioners,” he noted.

The VC who was here for a felicitation function and interactive session with doctors from various hospitals said that the university is also planning to introduce a three-year nursing course, keeping in mind the demand for nurses in the country, as well as to retain them here. “In several countries especially in the West, Indian nurses are very much in demand.

The new course will help plus-two students to take up the course and cater to the needs of the hospitals in the country. Talks will be held with Directorate of Medical Education and other regulatory bodies to introduce the course,” he said.

Though most Nursing courses are of four years duration, plus six months training, the new course will be designed in such a way that in just three years, it can be completed. We will also design special courses for ‘allied health professionals’.

These will be offered at the M.Sc level and those who have finished their B.Sc Nursing can opt for it. They would be supporting doctors, specialising in their own fields. To begin with, about six courses will be introduced in specialities like psychiatry, orthopaedics and others, he added.
