DRDO-BU Centre of Bharathiar University will be launched on Feb 02, 2010

The DRDO-BU Centre for Life Sciences of the Bharathiar University will be inaugurated on February 2 by Union Minister for Defence A.K. Antony, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University C. Swaminathan told a press conference here on Thursday.

Research

The Vice-Chancellor said the centre, a joint venture of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the university, had been set up at a cost of Rs. 20 crore.

While the funding was by the DRDO, the research activities would be undertaken by the university research assistants.

The centre which boasted a state-of-the-art laboratory and a digital library would be a hub for research assistants and scientists to carry out defence-related research and development (R&D) activities.

Mr. Swaminathan mentioned that bio-nano technology, bio-chemical sensing, bio-remediation, remote sensing and nano-particulate drug delivery would be some of the areas that would be given research focus, the Vice-Chancellor said.

Battery Cell

The centre had already come out with an energy-efficient battery cell that could be used by military personnel on duty in high altitudes or in remote places for communication purposes.

The technology for the cell would be transferred to the DRDO which would put it to use accordingly.

Hostel

The Vice-Chancellor said the Minister would also lay the foundation for a transit hostel for the research assistants who would be attached to the centre. It would cost Rs. 5 crore.

V.K. Saraswath, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, A. Sivathanu Pillai, Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller, Research and Development, DRDO, and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, BrahMos Aerospace, W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller, Research and Development, DRDO, are expected to attend the inaugural function.
