Electronic Coorporation of Tamil Nadu provides Broadband Connection for Rural Schools
To give rural schools much-needed access to World Wide Web.
In a move to take education out of classrooms, the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (EL-COT) will now provide government and corporation schools across the State with affordable broadband connection.
This will give rural schools much-needed access to the World Wide Web.
Although the education department has realised the importance of Internet education long ago, their USB wireless Internet connection, which was provided to some schools, proved ineffective due to its slow speed.
“A tender was announced for the cheapest broadband connection. BSNL won the tender by giving connection at a very nominal rate of Rs.550. The speed will be up to 256 Mbps,” said Santhosh Babu, managing director, ELCOT.
“This broadband facility will be made available for government offices too. However, only schools which are interested can avail of this special connection, which was designed by BSNL for ELCOT,” he added.
At a time when the state government has been taking extensive initiatives like equipping schools with computers and laptops, improving the school infrastructure with ICT- enabled platforms, projectors, etc., access to the Internet will complement these facilities greatly.
“Though the government has provided every school with nine computers and a laptop and other software, we NEED something more to educate the students. It is through images that we can win the attention of the students and education becomes more effective.
“Access to the internet makes available to us an extensive and limitless collection of videos and images of animals, historic buildings, science videos, etc. to capture the attention of the students,” said a teacher from a government school at Saidapet.
Only schools which are interested can avail of this special connection.
