Focus on improving Education
The Thalakkulathur grama panchayat in the district has come up with a scheme to provide focused and free training to select primary school students.
The focus will be on total educational improvement of children from the backward sections of society.
The local body will set up ‘Padana Veedu’ (learning centres) before 15th September, 2010 at the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) colonies of Vallikkattukavu, Edakkara, Pattarpalam, Parambath, Chengottumala, Chiravakkath, Porambra, Padannakalam and Thoonumannil.
The plan is to open the centres at anganwadis or lower primary or upper primary schools.
As many as 5 centres will train of SC / ST students. The other centres will admit students in the general category. The program will initially benefit around 280 students in 11 primary schools.
The panchayat had set apart 1.50 lakh from its Plan fund for the program. Students will get free study materials and the assistance of a trainer.
Classes will commence at 6 p.m. and conclude by 8 p.m. The honorarium for trainers will be paid by the panchayat.
The program was being launched after a survey among students.
Those in need of special training had been shortlisted from the 11 schools where the survey was carried out by the Education Committee of the local body, panchayat president P.K. Sathyan said.
Students who attended such programs the previous year had benefitted from it, he said.
A monitoring committee will oversee the implementation, he added.
