GSI Conducts Entrance Test

The Geological Society of India will be conducting on 22nd January, 2011 the entrance test to select students for participation in the sixth International Earth Science Olympiad to be held in Argentina.

This two – hour test will be held across 60 centres. Students in classes 10 and 11 who have not won medals in earlier Olympiad will be eligible to take part in the test.

Geological Society of India invites Applications for Training Camp

The Geological Society of India ( GSI ) will conduct an entrance test in Tiruchi on 23rd January, 2011, as part of its nation-wide exercise covering 58 districts, to choose 20 students of X and XI standards for attending a training camp at GSI, Bengaluru, during May 2011.

Chennai and Salem are the two other exam centres in Tamil Nadu.

The camp will encompass lectures, discussions and field work. The Indian National Earth Science Olympiad will be held after the camp.

Four students from the participating 20 will be selected to represent India at the fifth International Earth Science Olympiad ( IESO ) in Italy, during September 2011.

The GSI has received a generous grant from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi, for the purpose.

According to a circular issued by C.J.Kumanan, GSI Member and Reader and Head, Centre for Remote Sensing, Bharathidasan University, which is an institutional member, candidates born between 15th September, 1993 and 15th September, 1996, can appear for the entrance test.

Applicants should not have won a prize in an earlier IESO.

The two-hour test in English will comprise objective type questions spanning geosphere (45 per cent), atmosphere (20 per cent), hydrosphere (15 per cent) and astronomy (20 per cent).

Hard copy of application should include applicant’s name; date of birth; sex; school address; address for correspondence; email address; phone number; test centre opted (first preference and second preference); and signature with date.

Two passport size photographs should be enclosed. All candidates must produce at the time of the test, a certificate from the respective school head stating the standard in which the student was studying.

Applications will be received till 15th December, 2010, the circular said.

Merit certificate and cash prize of 5,000 each will be given to the four students selected for the IESO.

The Sudha Murthy Foundation, Bengaluru, will be awarded a cash prize of 15,000 to each of the IESO medallists.
