Gratuity to Private School Teachers

Gratuity to Private School Teachers

The Union Labour and Employment Ministry is working on a bill, to be introduced in the budget session of Parliament, entitling private school teachers to gratuity.

The Unorganised Sector Workers Social Security Bill, 2007 — introduced in September last — is also expected to be considered along with the recommendations of a Standing Committee, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said on Thursday.

He was speaking at a meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry here. On ‘contract labour,’ he said there was an urgent need for consensus to find a workable solution acceptable to all stakeholders — workers, employers and the State governments.

The Ministry followed the spirit of tripartite consultations in the true sense and would address the issue after elaborate discussions.

Now trade unions were seeking automatic absorption of contract labourers but employers vehemently opposed the demand.

Mr. Fernandes pointed that some State governments, in tune with the changing times, proposed measures to liberalise the Contract Labour Act, especially exemption to Special Economic Zones and export-oriented units from the legislation for boosting exports.
