Guidelines for Schools of Excellence Soon

The Chennai Corporation has drawn a list of guidelines for the schools of excellence that are to be developed in its 10 zones.

To start with, the schools would conduct entrance exams for students.

While there will be no entrance examination for children enrolling in class I, students of other classes, except class XI, will have to take an entrance examination to get admitted to a school of excellence. Based on students’ marks, a rank list will be prepared and admissions will be based on it.

According to a senior official of the civic body, the entrance examination for primary sections, except class I, will have questions in Tamil, English and mathematics.

For middle school students, the question paper of the entrance examination will cover Tamil, English, mathematics and general knowledge.

Students aspiring to make it to high school sections will be tested in Tamil, English, mathematics and social science.

Specific guidelines have also been drawn for admission to class XI, where preference would be given to students who have taken class X examinations in the same school.

The official said a lot of emphasis is being given to enrolment for the academic year.

The schools of excellence would have to strictly adhere to the maximum permissible number of students in each class, 30 for primary sections and 40 for middle, high and higher secondary sections.

“We have specific age criteria that would have to be met for all the classes,” the official said.

In addition to giving directions on developing the schools’ physical infrastructure and ambience, the guidelines also define roles of the teachers, parents and students in helping the school become one of excellence, the official said.
