High Court Bench orders a judicial enquiry for MCA Admissions

The Madras High Court, on Friday, ordered a judicial enquiry into alleged irregularities in admitting 44 candidates under Government quota in Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course offered by Nehru Memorial College at Puthanampatti in Tiruchi.

Admitting a writ petition filed by 35 candidates before the Madurai Bench, Justice S. Nagamuthu directed the Tiruchi Principal District Judge to enquire into the matter and file a report on January 23. The college officials as well as the petitioners were directed to cooperate in holding the enquiry.

The petitioners counsel said that his clients were selected to the MCA course for the academic years 2007-10 through the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test conducted by Anna University in Chennai.

They were allotted seats under the Government quota in Nehru Memorial College affiliated to Bharathidasan University.

Nevertheless, the college filled up all 120 seats on its own even before receiving the list of candidates sponsored by the Government. As an alternative, the college admitted the petitioners in the MCA course under the Centre for Distance Education and not in the regular stream.

Students Unaware

The petitioners came to know of the irregularity only after receiving the hall tickets for the first semester examination as they were allowed to attend classes until then and were also asked to pay the fees in commensurate with the regular stream candidates, the petitioners’ counsel claimed.

On the other hand, the counsel appearing for the college said that the petitioners could not be admitted in the regular stream as the list of Government quota candidates was not received on time. “I admit that there is an irregularity, but it was done with a bona fide intention. This is a political game against the Principal…It is the mistake committed by the Vice-Chancellor who offered a wrong programme,” the college counsel said.
