IGNOU to open more Community Colleges

The Indira Gandhi National Open University – IGNOU plans to increase the number of its community colleges across the country, said V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of the University, to reporters here on Tuesday.

About 12,000 students were enrolled in the community colleges it had opened since July this year. Of these, nearly 4,000 were in 50 colleges in Tamil Nadu. The University planned to touch 500 colleges in the country in two years.

It had launched garment, apparel and textile-related courses and opened a study centre at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management here.

Most of the workers in the textile and clothing sector were women. The sector wanted a large number of skilled workers.

At the community colleges, they would undergo training in specific areas such as computer-aided designing, entrepreneurship, green technologies in garment production and ethical practices.
