Satellite Campus to be started in IIM Kashipur

With a view to tap into the executive education market, the Indian Institute of Management ( IIM ), Kashipur is planning to open a satellite campus in Dehradun where it would hold its Management Development Programs ( MDPs ) and an Executive Fellowship Program ( EFP ) for senior executives. The Uttaranchal government had already proposed a 10-acre land site adjacent to the Uttarakhand Technical University in Dehradun for the campus, the IIM’s director Gautam Sinha.

He added that the initial proposal for the satellite campus was in its final stages of approval from the Uttaranchal government. Thereafter, it would be sent for clearance to the Ministry of Human Resource and Development ( MHRD ). “If all goes smoothly, then we should be able to begin construction in the Dehradun campus by next year,” he added.

When asked why the MDPs and EFP would be held outside the main campus at Kashipur, Sinha said that Dehradun had better connectivity with corporate India owing to its airport. In addition, the city itself was much more picturesque, which he hoped would attract executives and those in the senior management to the programs. MDPs and executive programs make for a substantial part of the revenue stream at all IIMs.

Sinha however said that he was unwilling to wait for the satellite campus to be completed before kickstarting the MDPs and was hoping to organise the institute’s first ever MDP by January 2013 at a makeshift location in Dehradun or in Kashipur itself, depending on the composition of the clientele. The EFP, which is aimed towards executives in the senior management, will however be offered only after the Dehradun campus was ready, he added.

Meanwhile, the construction of the boundary wall at the institute’s main permanent campus in Kashipur has also begun. The permanent campus will be built on a 191-acre land plot located around seven kms from the present temporary campus site. The director hoped for the construction to begin by next year.
