IIMs hike Fees, Bangalore to decide next week
After the IITs, premier B-schools are now hiking their fees. If you’re planning to join the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad ( IIM – A ) based on your excellent CAT 2012 score, be ready to shell out more than you’d budgeted for. The country’s top B – school has become costlier once again.
With a total fee of 16.6 lakh, the institute, which is ranked highest among all IIMs, leads the fee front. The increase will be applicable for the 2013 – 15 batch and the total intake will remain the same as last year ( 385 ).
The fee for Post – Graduate Programme ( PGP ) students of the 2012 – 2014 batch of IIM – A for their first academic year was approximately 7.4 lakh. IIM – A, in 2008, announced a nearly six – time increase in fee, from 2 lakh to 11.5 lakh for its flagship two – year PGP course in management. The fee was increased in the next two years to 15.5 lakh for the 2012 – 14 batch.
Next to follow IIM – A is IIM – Raipur. Although it’s a marginal increase, the fee structure here is 9.6 lakh compared to 9 lakh last year ( a hike of 60,000 ). The IIMs which haven’t yet decided on a fee hike include IIM Kozhikode and IIM Calcutta, which charged 10 lakh for 2012 – 14.
IIM – Bangalore, which increased the fee last year to 13 lakh will take a decision next week. IIMs which have stayed with last year’s fee structure include IIM Kashipur, IIM Lucknow and IIM Rohtak.
Seat hike and cuts :
Of the seven institutes, IIM Kashipur ( Uttarakhand ) will increase number of seats from 40 to 90.
IIM Kozhikode may increase intake from 360 to 400.
IIM Calcutta may decrease its intake from 463 to around 450 ( final number will depend on number of interviewed candidates meeting final admission criteria ).
IIM – T to offer Free Consultancy through Incubation Centre
As a way of rendering corporate responsibility, Indian Institute of Management – Tiruchi ( IIM – T ) has plans to offer free consultancy through its proposed incubation centre once it moves into permanent campus along the Tiruchi – Thanjavur National Highway.
In the process of providing free consultancy in the areas of finance, branding, human resource management and marketing, the incubation centre will accord an economic thrust to the region, IIM – T Director Prafulla Agnihotri said. The district administration, he said, was quite forthcoming to the proposal for starting the incubation centre in the vicinity of the permanent campus.
“The incubation centre will be akin to OPD ( Outpatient Department ) in hospitals. Prospective entrepreneurs will be provided space to operate at a very nominal cost and centralised facilities will be made available free of cost. Even after they move out after establishing their businesses, the incubation centre will continue to render hand – holding support,” Prof.Agnihotri said, advocating entrepreneurship in manufacturing sector for growth of the regional economy.
Faculties will visit the incubation centre on a daily basis and render free consultancy for small and medium enterprises.
The Institute, he said, was open to having a tie up with the National Research Centre for Banana ( NRCB ) and provide guidance on feasibility of agro processing businesses. Likewise, the scope for value addition to the cashew fruits cultivated in large quantities in neighbouring districts of Ariyalur and Pudukottai will be explored. The Cargo Complex at the Tiruchi Airport will help in giving the region an economic thrust.
Only through economic development can the region attract better domestic air connectivity. Leave alone the absence of connectivity to cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai, the timing of the first flight to Chennai is also disadvantageous as people from Tiruchi can reach the destination only in the latter part of the day.
The positive factors like good road connectivity between Chennai and Tiruchi and availability of sunlight must be utilised well by way of starting Special Economic Zones and generating solar power.
When Gujarat could install solar panels on the Narmada canal with the twin purposes of generating power and preventing water evaporation, there was no reason why Tamil Nadu cannot replicate the same over the Cauvery.

IIM Lucknow CAT Training for SC / ST Students
IIM – Lucknow has begun an exercise to enhance competitive skills of reserved category candidates and expand the pool of applicants by helping them train for the Common Admission Test ( CAT ).
Indian Institute of Management ( IIM ) officials here said an urgent need was felt to improve representation and opportunities for socio – economically deprived students at the institutes.
After discussions, a workable roadmap was evolved. It was decided that in the pilot phase, around 40 – 60 promising students ( from Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes categories ) amenable to management studies would be chosen from colleges around Lucknow.
They would be coached for two to three months by an external agency with expertise in training candidates for CAT.
The institute would pay for all expenses as a part of its CSR initiative.
But the institute said it would neither have any no role in the selection and training of candidates nor in any CAT – related process.
For CAT 2012, the institute has selected Team Satyam as its preferred vendor to select and prepare a batch of 50 SC / ST candidates and groom them for admission into post – graduate programmes in various IIMs.
However, Team Satyam is not associated with IIM with regards to CAT, said a faculty member.
“This special exercise for SC / ST candidates in no way ensures their admission to the post graduate programme in management of any IIM or at any other programme of any business school which accepts CAT scores.”
IIM – Lucknow Director Devi Singh said the exercise would help all IIMs get quality students from deprived categories.
It would also act as an incentive for students from these categories to dream big, he said.
The project will initially be restricted to Lucknow but the candidates can be from anywhere in India. Based on the results and feedback, it might be extended to other cities next year.
