Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode gearing up for ‘Backwaters 2008’
The Indian Institute of Management’s cultural festival promises to offer much more than sound and spectacle.

Indian rock band, Parikrama’ will be performing on the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K) campus, near Kozhikode, on January 13 as part of the annual management and cultural event ‘Backwaters 2008’ being held on the campus from January 11 to 13.

More than 65 B-schools including 40 B-schools from India and more than 25 international B-schools are taking part in the three-day event. The number of domestic B-schools participating in the event is likely to go up to 50 and above, says Harish Shashidhar, a member of the Backwaters organising committee.

“Backwaters is a chance every year for IIM-K to showcase itself to the national and international B- schools. It is also an opportunity for the students to hone their skills in various verticals of management study and to build rapport with industry. It is also definitely an opportunity to unwind from the gruelling academic sessions,” Mr. Harish says.

The 25 foreign B-schools also include universities that IIMK has tie-ups with for student exchange programmes. The entire event is managed by IIM-K students themselves and it has become a major event in the B-schools calendar.

The theme of this year’s Backwaters is ‘Evolutions’. “The greater corporate participation levels this time will definitely widen the learning arena as we move forward with a much bigger platform for students, academics and the industry to interact and build familiarity amongst each other,” says Mr. Harish.

“This also gels well with the theme for the event this year — ‘Evolution’ that basically represents the evolving nature of the competitive spirit of Backwaters,” he adds.

The annual IIMK alumni reunion called ‘Nostalgia’ will be held on the campus on January 12 and 13.

The alumni will be invited to the campus and they can relive the memorable days they had on the campus.

Elections to the Alumni Executive Committee will be held on the occasion for selecting members for steering it for the next two years. Other events at Nostalgia include corporate business quiz and knowledge-sharing sessions by alumni which would boost alumni-student interaction.

Media Contest

A media contest in collaboration with SET (Sony Entertainment Television) will be conducted where the participants will generate new ideas for innovative shows for Sony Entertainment Network’s youth channel, SAB.

Another event, Reliance White Knight, now into its second year, will bring together the best minds in the country to solve the nation’s pressing problems. If the theme for last year brought forth innovative ideas to make the Indian growth story inclusive, the urban development theme for White Knight 2008 will bring the problems associated with the burgeoning urban settlements into sharp focus.

Students from leading B-schools will be asked to work on a business plan that will help alleviate some of the problems facing urban development.

Apart from the glory of being crowned the champions, the winning team will take home a whopping Rs.1.5 lakh.

An equal amount will be held in trust by IIM-K and released to an NGO as and when the idea gets into the implementation mode.

Backwaters, this year, will also feature a new business simulation game, spread across all verticals and organised in collaboration with a foreign university.

While the simulation will give an opportunity for participants to apply their classroom concepts to the real world, a huge online treasure hunt has been organised to keep them guessing throughout December.

Various informal on-campus games and cultural events will also mark the three-day extravaganza. ‘Deloitte Deal with It’, a merger and acquisition real life simulation game, ‘Beat the Market’, a strategy simulation game across all management verticals and Innovations’ in the systems domain will be the management games organised. ‘Best Employer’ and ‘Head hunter’ will be new games in the HR domain. Cultural programmes will be conducted on January 11 and 12.
