Campaigners welcome Centre of Excellence Status for IMHANS
The Centre’s decision to confer ‘centre-of-excellence’ status on the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) in Kozhikode has brought cheer to health campaigners here.
IMHANS would now have better treatment and research facilities, M.K. Raghavan, MP, said here on Wednesday.
The move to overlook IMHANS and accord the status to the Department of Psychiatry in Thiruvananthapuram had come in for criticism.
The decision is the result of efforts by all those who had campaigned for years. We thank Union Minister for Health Ghulam Nabi Azad for his help, Mr. Raghavan said.
There had been moves to deny the facility to Kozhikode. The Ministry of Health had sanctioned Rs.30 crore for the facility. Several representations were made to the Union Health Minister and the Health Secretary in this regard, the MP said.
INTUC district president M. Rajan, in a statement here on Wednesday’ congratulated all for ‘campaigning for Imhans.’ The institute will be able to offer specialised care to people of the region, he said.
