Microsoft Innovation Centre launched at JCET

Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology at Pagalavadi near Thuraiyur in Tiruchi district celebrated the privilege of having a Microsoft Innovation Centre ( MIC ) on its campus on 5th December, 2012.

The MIC was launched by Microsoft’s Country Head Joseph Landes. The College Chairman M.Subramanian exchanged MoU documents with Mr.Landes in the presence of the Vice – Chancellor of Anna University, Chennai, P.Kaliraj. The MoU signifies Microsoft’s rating of the college as a primary institution among self – financing colleges in the country. The rating followed development of 108 ‘Windows 8’ applications by staff and students and their active participation in all contests hosted by Microsoft Corporation.

They participated in the windows store as part of Windows Apps Fest Guinness Record. The MIC at the college will be among 92 such centres worldwide, facilitating collaboration on IT – based research and development, product development and management, technology advancement, professional training, industry partnerships, placement opportunities, skill management, knowledge transfer, and strong industry – institute interactions. The College, according to the Principal, N.Kannan, will get all the resources from Microsoft campus in Hyderabad, for vibrant functioning of the MIC. The MoU ceremony in Chennai was telecast to jubilant staff and students in the college through video – conferencing. Mr.Landes appreciated their efforts for getting the MIC started on the campus.

Prof.Kalidas said that Central and State governments were keen to promote research and innovation on campuses right from undergraduate level.

First College Excellence Cluster launched

The Confederation of Indian Industry – Tiruchi Zone, on Thursday saw through the launch of the first College Excellence Cluster, conceptualised to facilitate institutions to benchmark themselves and engage with industry qualitatively, at the Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology near Thuraiyur in the district.

The Jayaram Group of institutions, which also encompasses the Oxford College of Engineering, Shri Angalamman College of Engineering and Technology, and Jayaram Polytechnic College, constitute the cluster created to serve as a platform to provide students, teachers and the college community an exposure to current industry environment and practices.

As per the understanding, the CII would prevail upon Chief Executive Officers and other top-level executives of leading companies to visit the cluster colleges, interact with faculties and students and share knowledge on best industrial practices, skills and values.

Speaking on the occasion, S. Gopinath, Chairman, CII – Tiruchi Zone, called for integration of industry insights into quality education to build capabilities of students suiting the country’s progress on the fronts of manufacturing, software, health and education.

CII’s launch of College Excellence Cluster follows the start of Fabrication Excellence Cluster with nine industries in the zone.

The latest initiative was in keeping with the CII’s keenness to create and sustain the environment for industrial growth through advisory and consultancy process.

The Education Panel of the CII was working towards enhancing quality, relevance and access to education, he said.

Mr. Gopinath; P. Devadas Manoharan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology – Tiruchi; and M. Subramaniam, Chairman, Jayaram Group of Institutions, launched the cluster together.

Dr. Devadas called for creation of a model of sustainable development without causing disturbance to the eco system.

The role of engineers was vital for developing sustainable and equitable development, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor opined that the attributes of communication, analytical skill and problem solving ability that industry looks for in students need to be developed in schools.

Students must be facilitated to pursue vocations of their choice, he emphasised, and observed that industry support would reflect in knowledge enhancement of teachers and enhanced scope for multi-disciplinary research by faculties and students.
