KEA CET May 2013
KEA CET to be held on 2013 May 1, 2, 3

The decision was taken at the governing council meeting of the KEA here on 31st January, 2013.
However, though the CET is the qualifying examination for both medical and engineering courses, medical seat aspirants will have to wait for the Supreme Court’s final verdict on the National Eligibility – cum – Entrance Test ( NEET ) to find out if they have to write the CET.
According to the schedule drawn up by the KEA, the subject papers will be held on 1st May, 2013 and 2nd May, 2013, while the Kannada test for students applying under the ‘Horanadu’ and ‘Gadinadu’ categories will be on 3rd May, 2013.

Refund Extra Fees
VTU, KEA urged to refund Extra Fees collected from Students
The National Students’ Union of India has alleged that the Karnataka Examinations Authority and Visvesvaraya Technological University have cheated meritorious students admitted to MBA and MCA during 2011 – 12, by collecting extra fees.
Addressing presspersons here on 4th December, 2012, NSUI coordinator, Dharwad, Rajat Ullagaddimath and coordinators from other districts said while the government had fixed fee of
24,390 and
24,890 for MBA and MCA courses respectively in VTU regional and extension centres, more than
50,000 had been collected from students.
Mr. Ullagaddimath said that VTU had regional PG centres in Bangalore, Mysore, Davangere, Belgaum and Gulbarga, and during 2011 – 12, as many as 542 students had taken admission through counselling conducted by the KEA.
He said that at the time of admission, KEA authorities had asked students to pay a fee of
53,590, stating that the extra amount would be either adjusted against the fee for third and fourth semesters or refunded.
“But the students were again asked to pay the same amount as fee during third and fourth semesters this year. The students reminded them about the extra amount they had paid previously, but at all the regional centres students were again told to pay the additional amount, which would be refunded. Now the students are writing the third semester examinations, and there has been no mention of refunds,” he said.
Memorandum
He said the students, led by the NSUI, had submitted memorandums to the university authorities and the Higher Education Minister through the respective deputy commissioners. “However, there has been no action on the issue.
The VTU authorities have even threatened students participating in the agitation with dire consequences,” he said.
“Interestingly, the VTU authorities have collected fees as per the government notification for those who had taken admission to the first year during 2012 – 13,” he said.
Mr. Ullagaddimath said that if the students were not refunded the extra amount of
60,000 each, the NSUI would be forced to intensify the agitation and also approach the court seeking legal remedy.
The NSUI coordinators said that they hoped that a solution in the students’ favour was announced by the government during the Belgaum session. “Otherwise, after 20th December, 2012 we will launch an agitation,” they said.
MBA MCA Vacant Seats
50% of MBA, MCA Seats Left Vacant in Karnataka
The Karnataka Examinations Authority ( KEA ), Bangalore completed its PGCET 2012 online seat selection process for the MBA, MCA and M.Tech courses across Karnataka under government quota. After finalising the seat allotment process noted that 50% of the MBA, MCA government seats left vacant.
Around 236 colleges in Karnataka with an intake of 14,148 seats for MBA course and 8,007 seats for MCA course allotted through the Postgraduate Common Entrance Test ( PGCET ) conducted by KEA. In which only 7,600 students have reported to the allotted colleges.
At the same time, management quota seats also remain vacant. Total 13,000 seats are available for the Karnataka Management Admission Test ( KMAT ), only 9,000 were filled.
Hari Krishna Maram, Member of the governing council body of All India Management Association said, “The interest in business degrees is fading for the past three years. It’s worse this year. Placements are less attractive. In most industries, placements aren’t taking place. Students are reluctant to invest up to
5 lakh for an MBA degree after graduation. Many are taking up jobs and opting for part time MBA courses, instead of full time programmes. With centralized exams for management courses coming up, the numbers might rise in the future.”

KEAs Post on NEET 2013
Medical Aspirants in Dilemma over KEA’s Post on NEET 2013
A recent update on the Karnataka Examination Authority ( KEA ) has caused confusion for the parents and pre university students who want to pursue medicine next academic year. As per the post titled – NEET 2013, on the website the online application procedure for the examination will begin on December 01, 2012 and the examination will be held in May 2013.
The Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE ) will be conducting NEET 2013 according to their syllabus; this has concerned many parents and students alike. The students who are currently in the final year of the pre university level are still following the State syllabus and this will handicap their performance in NEET 2013.
Parents expressed that the CBSE and State syllabi are different and it would be difficult for the State syllabus students to answer the Biology, Physics and Chemistry papers in NEET 2013. The first year students of the pre university are following the CBSE syllabus and it would be only fair to conduct NEET from 2014.
A renowned academician revealed that there was a vast difference between the two syllabi and the CBSE students solved more advanced problems. A final year Science student revealed that the CBSE syllabus discusses each topic more in depth and it would be difficult for the students to prepare for NEET along with the final pre university exams.
The KEA website further informed that they would take up capacity building of students that will fully prepare them to take the NEET 2013. This would be telecast on Doordarshan’s Chandana channel from October 16, 2012 from 9:15 pm to 10:00 pm till May 2013. Some academicians are skeptic about the lessons being telecast, questioning if Science is a cinema that can be understood through television.
It is believed that a separate NEET Cell is being set up by the KEA which would interact directly with the students and help them prepare for the examination. The KEA will also conduct mock NEET in the offline and online mode from January 2013. The parents are eagerly waiting for a response from the State Government to clarify if the candidates will have to take up the CET or NEET for admission to medical programs in 2013.
