Launch of Model ICT School
The Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) at Karuvarakundu in the district is set to become the first Model ICT (information communication technology) School in the State. It will lead the Model ICT School programme being implemented in select high schools of 140 constituencies in the State.
Speaker K. Radhakrishnan will launch the Model ICT School programme at Karuvarakundu on Sunday. The programme devised by IT@School Project will convert one high school in each Assembly constituency into an ICT-enabled campus.
‘‘We are planning not only to set up smart classrooms in the select high schools, but also to upgrade the entire campus as a model ICT school by training the entire faculty in IT and ICT,” said K. Anvar Sadath, executive director of IT@School Project.
The teachers will be trained and made to create own digital content by making use of the available resources at schools. They will thus upload their digital contents to a general online repository.
The programme stipulates that a minimum of five classrooms in a school will be upgraded to smart classrooms by employing multimedia projectors and notebook computers.
The Karuvarakundu GHSS has set the lead by installing smart classroom ICT facilities in 18 of its classrooms. No other school in the State has so many smart classrooms. “That’s exactly why that school has been selected to lead the programme,” said Mr. Sadath.
The IT@School Project is providing financial assistance to the 140 schools selected by the State’s MLAs. But the Karuvarakundu school set itself a model for others by raising funds from a collective of parents, teachers, students and the general public, thanks to the efforts of A.P. Anil Kumar, MLA, from Wandoor.
Minister for Education M.A. Baby recently declared this school as a ‘centre of excellence.’ Mr. Sadath said the project would seek to enhance the level of knowledge acquisition process in schools. School IT coordinators and students IT coordinators will also contribute to content generation.
The State is witnessing the implementation of a complete ICT-enabled education from this year.
An ICT-enabled IT textbook for the 8th standard has been rolled out from this year.
