Madras University Senior Faculty visits MKU on November 25 & 26
A nine-member team from the University of Madras comprising its senior faculty in the field of life sciences is visiting Madurai Kamaraj University on November 25 and 26 to explore the possibilities of collaboration between the two universities.
The team of senior professors, Dean (Research) and Special Officer of University of Madras will visit the laboratories of School of Biological Sciences in MKU and discuss with the faculty on the possible/potential areas of collaboration for research and exchange programmes.
G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, told The Hindu over phone on Saturday that this will be the first-ever major academic partnership in science between two universities in the State and the expertise in life sciences will be further tapped for mutual benefit.
After studying the facilities available at MKU, the team members will have a first round of meeting with the MKU Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel which will be followed by a meeting between the two Vice-Chancellors here on November 27.
“We have invited the life sciences experts of MKU also to our university. A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed after Dr.Karpaga Kumaravel visits the University of Madras on November 30,” Dr.Thiruvasagam said.
Common Facility Centre
He said that a common facility centre in life sciences will be of great advantage for the researchers, faculty and students of both the universities. Dr.Thiruvasagam said that the University of Madras is very strong in the area of medical science and it has been receiving special grants for projects in that field.
P. Gunasekaran, Chairperson, School of Biological Sciences, MKU, said that the life sciences team of the two universities will identify possible areas of a joint venture in botany, biochemistry, biotechnology and so on.
“After our Vice-Chancellor Dr.Karpaga Kumaravel gives the nod, the preparations for a MoU will be made and it will be placed in the varsity Syndicate meeting for approval,” Dr.Gunasekaran said.
