Madurai Kamaraj University offers ‘Advanced Diploma Course in Plant Genetic Engineering’
The Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) is offering a one-year ‘Advanced Diploma Course in Plant Genetic Engineering’ for those aspiring for a career in the area of plant biotechnology. Admission process for the coming academic year is now underway.
Every year, 10 students are admitted to this course, which is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, under its Technologist Training Program.
“Plant genetic engineering has emerged as an important tool in crop improvement and functional genomics. The course is framed to provide intense hands-on training in recombinant DNA methods and genetic engineering,” says K. Veluthambi, Course Coordinator, School of Biotechnology, MKU. Students can pursue the course post-M.Sc. and those selected for the course will receive a studentship of Rs.5,000 per month.
Selection for admission is based on an entrance test to be conducted on March 6 at eight centres in the country – Chennai, Madurai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram. The Central Government reservation policy will be followed for admission, Dr. Veluthambi said.
In the first semester, students would be taught two advanced theory papers in Plant Genetic Engineering and Functional Genomics besides two laboratory courses in Recombinant DNA Technology and Plant Genetic Engineering. During the second semester, students will be assigned to individual research laboratories in MKU to carry out full-time research project.
“Biotechnology companies and research centres with crop improvement programmes require experts with practical training in plant genetic engineering. Students who undergo training through this particular course in MKU can also seek Ph.D. admission in reputed institutions,” Dr. Veluthambi said.
Candidates with first class (60 per cent and above, minimum marks for SC/ST is 50 per cent) in M.Sc. (Biology, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Life Sciences), M.Sc. in Agriculture and related courses, can apply. Students in M.Sc. second year and have scored 60 per cent or above in the first three semesters are also eligible to apply.
Interested candidates can download the application form, prospectus and fee details from the university websites: www.mkuniversity.org and www.biotechmku.org. Details of the course and its syllabus are available on website www.biotechmku.org.
The last date for receipt of applications is February 8 and the entrance test is on March 6.
