Mother Theresa Institute of Health Sciences offers M.Sc. Nursing
Be it teaching institutions or hospitals, the demand for highly qualified nursing professionals has increased over the years.
To cater to the growing needs, the Mother Theresa Institute of Health Sciences (MTIHS) is all set to introduce an M.Sc program in Nursing in Puducherry from this academic year.
MTIHS, a government institution, is the first college in Puducherry to start the Post Graduate Course in Nursing.
The two-year program will have an intake of 17 students and four disciplines -Medical and Surgical Nursing, Community Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing and Mental Health Nursing, MTIHS Dean V. Balu said.
“The eligibility for the Course is a minimum of 55 percent pass in B.Sc Nursing and one year clinical training after the Course.
The second year of the M.Sc. Course will consist of hands-on-training and there will be no theory classes,” Dr. Balu said.
Admissions for the Postgraduate Course would be open within a week. “The demand for nurses is on the increase. For teaching in colleges, the minimum qualification required is an M.Sc for lecturers. In a few years, there will be a shortage of M.Sc qualified nurses.
Several private hospitals require M.Sc qualified nurses for specialized areas such as Intensive Care Units,” he said.
The institute has also proposed to start a two-year diploma in Indian System of Medicine (ISM) Pharmacist. “We already have a Course for allopathy pharmacist. There is a dearth of ISM pharmacists to dispense the drugs.
Students who have passed Class XII with science subject are eligible for the Course,” he said.
Course for staff nurses
Apart from these, MTIHS has planned to start Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing for staff nurses who had completed the three-year diploma Course in General Nursing and Midwifery.
“The duration of the normal B.Sc. Nursing Course is four years. The Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing is a two-year program and is equal to the basic Course.
Staff nurses who had completed the diploma Course are eligible and it is similar to the lateral entry to engineering Courses,” Dr. Balu said.
With a total of 25 seats, the Course was available only at a few institutions in Chennai including the Madras Medical College.
Till date, there was no institution in Puducherry which offered the Course.
“Staff nurses who want to update themselves can undergo the Course. Of the total seats, ten seats will be earmarked for staff nurses of the Health department,” Dr. Balu added.
Application Form Submission 16 Dec 2020 to 16 Jan 2021.
