A three – day State – level learner’s assessment training programme ( Standards I to V ) based on the National Curriculum Framework ( NCF ) 2005 for primary teachers and Education Department staff from eight districts was inaugurated here on 2nd August, 2011.

Addressing the programme, Jayashree Raghunandan, State Project Director, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan ( SSA ), said that the trial runs were first held in 2007 – 08 in ten States, of which Tamil Nadu was one.

While the programme was initially introduced on a trial basis in 16 schools in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur in 2007 – 08, it was extended in 2010 – 11 to all Government schools in Coimbatore and Tiruvallur.

Following the development of source book in Tamil language, it was extended this year to six more districts : Madurai, Dindigul, The Nilgiris, Salem, Thanjavur and Vellore, in addition to Coimbatore and Tiruvallur districts.

A total of 182 primary teachers, Block Resource Teacher Educators, Assistant Educational Elementary Officers, SSA Supervisors and District Institute of Education and Training ( DIET ) from these eight districts took part in the programme.

Ms. Raghunandan told the gathering that they must first understand and get convinced on the new assessment system before they could become master trainers and train others in their districts.

The assessment system laid heavy emphasis on by – rote learning and the teaching was also towards this direction. To change the direction of teaching, the assessment system must first change.

Teachers must be able to stimulate learning inside the child. If a student did not learn, it cannot be said that it was the student’s fault.
