N.M.R. Subbaraman College for Women inaugurated
It is not a click that a society’s progress is measured with regard to the kind of progress that its women members have achieved. Madurai city now has one more institution which will contribute deliver support to the progress of women.
A women’s college in the name of one of Madurai’s stalwarts in the creation of a just social order, N.M.R. Subbaraman, who was also referred to as ‘Madurai Gandhi’ was inaugurated here on Thursday near Teppakulam.
Madurai Gandhi N.M.R. Subbaraman College for Women was the product of a long-time dream of the Sourashtra community people in the city to provide education to women.
In fact, it was in the year 1945 during a community conference it was decided that women should be given equal opportunity in education which would alone empower them.
In accordance with this resolution, in 1947, the elders of the community established the Sourashtra Women’s Vidya Sangam and established a girl’s high school.
The high school over the years transformed into a higher secondary school and in 2007, the diamond jubilee year, a resolution was passed to establish a college for women.
R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, inaugurated the new building and in his address expressed his wish that the college should become a university in the future and stated that MKU would provide all the support from their side for enhancing the academic standards.
He also said that MKU during his tenure had set a precedent by electing the first woman member to its Syndicate, a women’s study centre was also established using the UGC grant.
He also suggested the establishment of a planning board and quality assurance cell to ensure high quality education in the long run.
N. Nanmaran, MLA, Madurai East, former Congress MP A.G.S. Ram Babu, G. R. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Madurai Gandhi N.M.R.S. College for Women, M.P.V.K. Sitabai and R.V. Shobana were also present.
