Ooty Students Head for Space Camp in the U.S.

Come Sunday, 54 students of the Good Shepherd International School (GSIS), near here, will head for the United States of America to participate in a space camp, which will be organised by the United States Space and Rocket Centre, the official visitor centre of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Huntsville, Alabama.

Major part

Pointing out that Indian students from various schools have been participating in such programmes in large numbers in recent years, the Principal, GSIS, P.C. Thomas, told ‘The Hindu’ that this year students from GSIS will form a significant part of the Indian contingent.

Established in 1965 by the State of Alabama, the centre is a leading space science museum which has since 1982 been familiarising students from various parts of the world with various aspects of space missions.

While the space camp was for students in the age group of 9-11, the centre also has a Space Academy for students aged between 12 and 14 and the Advanced Space Academy for those in the 15-18 age group.

In addition to learning a great deal about space and space travel, the ‘education beyond the classrooms experience’ will enable the students to pick up valuable tips relating to life skills, he said.

The international exposure will help break barriers.

Pointing out that the participants gained valuable knowledge, Dr. Thomas said that it had become part of the school’s calendar.
