Periyar University to offer new five-year integrated course in Earth Science
The Department of Geology of Periyar University will offer a new five-year integrated course, M.Sc. Earth Science, under the choice based credit system pattern from the 2008-09 academic year.
Students who had completed Plus Two with physics and chemistry subjects were eligible to apply for the programme. The new programme would facilitate students in this part of the State to study the earth science, natural resources, and geosciences, Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju said.
Students would learn about the origin on the earth, rocks, minerals, palaeolife, earthquakes, Tsunami, disaster management, mountain dynamics, water, petroleum exploration, remote sensing, geographic information system and global positioning system during the course, he added.
The geosciences field had a large number of job opportunities.
Students completing the course would be able to get jobs in organisations such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Geological Survey of India, Indian Space Research Organisation, National Remote Sensing Agency, State Mining and ground water departments and various Information Technology and oil companies in India and abroad.
Application form and prospects for the programme could be obtained from the Registrar.
The cost of the form would be Rs. 100. It would be given free of cost for students belonging to SC/ST and physically challenged. Application could also be downloaded from www.periyaruniversity.ac.in.
Mr. Thangaraju further said that the university had planned to establish Periyar Institute of Community Education, which would offer job-oriented certificate and diploma courses for students who had SSLC/Plus II qualification. Courses would be offered for graduates also.
The university would establish four research centres – Centre for Nanotechnology, Centre for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Entrepreneurship Development Centre and Co-operative Research Centre – in the coming academic year, the Vice-Chancellor said.
These centres would undertake research and development activities with financial assistance from various funding agencies.
