Panel Fixes 9% Hike for School Fees for Next 3 Years
A 9 per cent hike in fees for the next three academic years has been fixed for schools which the private schools fee determination committee, chaired by Justice S.R. Singaravelu, has been hearing after the Madras High Court directive in May.
Several schools had approached the High Court earlier this year, appealing against the fee structure previously given by the committee that applied to all private schools across the State.
On 3rd May, 2012 the High Court had set aside the orders of the committee, then headed by Justice K. Raviraja Pandian, with respect to the nearly 300 institutions and referred the matter back to the panel for fresh consideration.
Justice Singaravelu said that the percentage was arrived at taking into account inflation and hikes in dearness allowances, among other factors.
“The number of schools that had appealed has gone up from 383 to 400, but we will complete a personal hearing for all schools before December as asked by the court,” he said.
Of the 400 schools, the committee has completed hearings for about 160 so far. Through mediation between schools and parents, the committee has been able to facilitate a refund of close to 1 crore, he added.
Delhi Govt Considers Double Shifts in Private Schools
The Delhi government may just be reconsidering its decision on allowing private unaided schools to run double shifts. The Directorate of Education says there have been demands, but it has been turning them down till now. A private unaided school in south Delhi has gone to the Delhi high court on the issue, and the department is consulting stakeholders and discussing “safeguards” before presenting its opinion in court.
Such a demand had been placed before the department even in 2009. “We had refused then. There were fears that instead of a separate school, the management would simply extend the morning one or move a certain section of the kids to the evening shift. Now we are looking at safeguards for maintaining academic standards,” says Amit Singla, Director, Education. Another reason for the rethink is the stupendous increase in intake over the last few years in government schools.
The department is constantly trying to cope with the yearly swell. “If these schools get to run second shifts, it may reduce the burden on us,” says Singla, adding, “But it depends on the family’s capacity to pay. Most of our clientele is poor.”
