One new private medical college approved

One new private medical college has been approved in Tamil Nadu while three seats from the State quota in nine private medical colleges were filled on the second day of general counselling.

Madha Medical College, beyond Porur in Chennai, has been granted affiliation to admit 150 students for the year 2011-12. A minority institution, it has to provide 75 seats to the State pool.

A total of 736 seats also came up under the single window counselling on 2nd July, 2011. Three seats were taken, all at PSG Medical College, Coimbatore, leaving 733 in the pool to be filled.

Ninety-seven seats each were taken from Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Annapoorna Medical College to be used in the State pool as their applications seeking minority status are being processed.

Minority institutions submit 50 per cent of their seats to the State pool and non-minority institutions, 65 per cent. The seats from private colleges were included only on the second day of counselling.

Seats at the Government Dental College were also taken by students on 2nd July, 2011.

Parleys on Medical Seats Surrender Successful Minister

With the fate of recognition for some private medical colleges in the State yet undecided, the government is able to provide, at best, a reasonable estimate of the number of seats that will be surrendered by private colleges to the State quota.

Health Minister V.S. Vijay told The Hindu that parleys with private medical colleges were successful and all of them that had the necessary MCI clearance had promised to give the specified percentage of their seats to the State pool.

“All these seats will be available in the first round of counselling itself, which begins on 30th June 2011,” Dr. Vijay said. A total of 767 seats will be available if MCI clearance is granted in the next few days for two private medical colleges.

Ten private medical colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University have agreed to shift the seats to the State pool.

These colleges are mandated to surrender 65 per cent of their total number of seats, the only exception being in the case of minority institutions that have to surrender 50 per cent. There are four such minority institutions.

The Melmaruvathur Adiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research will give 65 per cent of its total of 150 seats – 97 seats to the government pool.

So also will PSG Institute of Medical Sciences, Coimbatore. Perunthurai Medical College, Perunthurai will hand over 39 seats, as usual, being 65 per cent of its total of 60 seats. The four minority institutions will be required to surrender 50 per cent of their seats.
