PSGR Krishnammal College for Women Plans Degree Course in Dance
Good news for females aspiring to become choreographers and professional dancers. A city-based women’s college has planned to introduce a full-fledged Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) course in Natya (dance) this year. “Usually people go for a diploma in performing arts. We want to help competent people acquire university degrees in this stream.
Hence, we planned this course,” said Yesodha Devi, Principal of the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, which is keen to introduce the course from the academic year 2008-09.
This would be a six-semester degree course. The college submitted its application to the Bharathiar University for approval in Oct 2007 and a commission would inspect the college in February or March.
“We are awaiting the university’s nod,” she said.
In Coimbatore, this would be the first bachelor degree program offered in dance. Madras University offers an integrated five-year MA (Natya) course.
Qualification to join this course is a pass in plus-two and basic knowledge in dance. According to University’s stipulation, 50 students can join this course every year.
