SVPITM plans to set up National Textile University

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management here has mooted a proposal to develop this institution into a National Textile University, the first of its kind in the country.

Institute Director S.R. Pujar told here on September 28, 2011 that the proposal was to develop the institute, which was set up under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Textiles in 2006 to offer textile management programmes, into a unitary university by 2020 with the support of the Union and State governments.

The university would need 500 acres and would be established in any State that provided this extent of land and financial support. The Union government would extend financial assistance.

But, priority would go to establishing the university in Tamil Nadu since this institute was already functioning in Coimbatore.

At present, about 300 students were studying in the institute that offered postgraduate diploma and diploma courses related to the textile sector, apart from doctorate and M.Phil programmes.

It also conducted management development courses for industry personnel and offered project consultation to textile units.

A team would visit the China Textile University to study the systems adopted by it. The process for establishing the university in India would start by 2016 and it would be launched by 2020, he said.

Meanwhile, the institute planned to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bangladesh University of Textiles and have students from the university here for short – term courses.

Several Indians were working as supervisors in the textile units in Bangladesh and placement potential was high for the Indian students to get jobs in the textile units in other countries.

The institute was recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education and had approached the Association of Indian Universities for recognition.

It was also the Nodal Centre for Upgradation of Textile Education and would design curriculum for textile courses and publish books that could be used as reference material, he said.
