SASTRA University offers M.Tech in Nuclear Engineering

Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University, Thanjavur, is offering a two-year M.Tech. Program in Nuclear Engineering from this academic year 2008-09.

According to Dr. S. Swaminathan, Director, Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Biomaterials, SASTRA University, the course aims at exposing students to various aspects of nuclear engineering and training them to pursue a career in nuclear power and nuclear medicine sectors or defence and instrumentation sectors.

The curriculum for the M.Tech. in Nuclear Engineering was formulated by nuclear scientists belonging to the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, and the Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi, with inputs from SASTRA faculty.

The program would have papers in advanced mathematics, nuclear physics, reactor physics and nuclear reactor technology.

There would be a laboratory course in radiation measurement. A host of elective subjects have been included in the curriculum. Modalities to enable students to do projects in the laboratories of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) were being worked out, he said.

SASTRA University is starting another M.Tech course in Pharmaceutical Technology from the academic year 2008-09.
